On Easter Saturday a guided wartime walk was given around
Loftus by Stuart
McMillan. One of the many interesting things we saw was the base of a Blacker Bombard, also known as the 29mm Spigot Mortar. It is located on the
south side of the Foundry Bridge, looking towards the railway station and the
road to Liverton.
The weapon was hated by the army and was used mainly by the Home Guard,
although 22,000 were built very few, if any were used in anger.
